There’s something about going to a resort for a bit of relaxation time that almost defies description. Of course, one of the key benefits has to do with the fact that you’re “away.” When you choose your destination, you’re usually looking for a few key elements, such as beautiful surroundings, comfortable rooms, several options for dining, and a few choices for recreation.
When you can also find something that can only be called “atmosphere” you are definitely on the right track. This is certainly possible when your destination has the word “lodge” in its name. Plan to stay at one of the truly historic locations in the region and you have completed a wish list almost anyone would be proud to claim.
Land Grant Site
Governors Lodge Resort Hotel is located on property that was once part of a 50-acre land grant, made to James Dawe, shortly after the arrival of the Pitcairners in the mid-1800s. The land was in the Charles Christian family when he purchased the property from Dawe. (Charles was the grandson of Fletcher Christian, of Bounty fame.) As time passed, the subdivided land was home to members of the Baileys, with the connection to the Christian family through Emily Christian’s marriage to George Bailey.
Today, the resort offers 55 individual units, on 12 acres of subtropical gardens and majestic Norfolk pines, beautifully landscaped for the enjoyment of guests. Each one-bedroom unit has a living area, kitchenette, and separate bedroom, in addition to a front deck. The combination of modern amenities with the gorgeous, historic setting make this lodge and resort a most desirable destination.
Units are just a short walk from the shops and attractions, and you always have the convenience of the on-site restaurant, café, and lounge bar. Amenities include swimming pool, heated spa, dining options, available tours, and more. Your accommodations offer gas heaters, ceiling fans, sofa bed wireless Internet service, microwave, hair dryer, and ironing facilities. Deluxe luxury units add a double-spa bath, lounge, and amazing views.
Dining, Lounge Options
Lodge guests enjoy Bailey’s Restaurant in a beautifully restored home with fine cuisine. You’ll have a memorable dining experience and can enjoy lunch on the verandah which features original flagstones. Plan to have a pre-dinner cocktail in the lounge before selecting from the enticing menu. For a more “bright and breezy” experience, visit Governor’s Café, a modern shade structure complementing the historic homestead. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a continental breakfast buffet, or to order from the a la carte menu.
Save some time for the Lounge Bar, where you can relax, sip on a cappuccino, and surf the Internet at your leisure. Play cards, read a book, and just relax. That’s why you’re here. After all, the resort has been re-established as a leading accommodation property and was a Gold Award Winner in the 2008 Norfolk Tourism Awards. The lodge and resort are conveniently located within easy reach of tourist attractions and shopping, offering all the modern amenities you desire in perfect harmony with the historic setting.
